Research Unit on Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases

The research unit UMR_S 1166-ICAN is situated in the heart of Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in Europe. Our unit research was established in January 1, 2014 and renewed in January 1, 2019 for a 5 new year period with Inserm and Sorbonne Université tutorships.

It brings together 5 internationally recognized research teams with complementary interests and approaches in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular and cellular biology, physiology and pharmacology to bear upon cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. These teams are grouped together in Pierre and Marie Curie School of Medicine located at 91 boulevard de l’Hôpital in Paris.

As the principal cause of mortality in developed countries, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases are  highlighting the need for a concerted effort to confront this problem. These diseases share pathophysiological characteristics as diet, lifestyle, environment, genetic and epigenetic factors that contribute to disease progression and are also the initial cause. The ICAN unit is based on the idea that interactions between basic and clinical research are critical for future progress in understanding these diseases.

ICAN research unit teams, in association with teams from Saint-Antoine and Les Cordeliers research centers, are members of the Institute of Cardiometabolism and Nutrition IHU ICAN.
